My love of comics (more history) part 3
1990-1993 – Such names as Lee, Portacio, Silvestri, MacFarlane, Liefeld, and Larson were all the rage coming from Marvel… a breath of fresh air had been had with comics. My brothers and myself became a bit more knowledgeable about comics, their workings and… gasp… collector’s worth! My brothers became enamored with the investment that comics could be. Through out this time… my brothers bought a lot of comics that were worth some good money… and to my dismay, in their collections they had in pristine condition, that giant sized annual The Amazing Spider-Man no. 21. And of course, later on they would have Amazing Spider-Man #361 (first full appearance of Carnage) in the same condition. I would look at their comics all in their plastics and boards and then look over to my comics all worn and what not and feel a little cheated. But after awhile of self pity, I realized that though they had them in the plastics all nice and neat, mine were better. Mine had been read and enjoyed. I’m not going to lie, I ended up collecting a few myself, being real anal with them, but that ended almost as quick as it started. I realized that it would be a slap in the face to the creators and makers of these comics to put them away untouched, they did these not to make them investments, the comic collectors did that, they made them to be cherished, and that is what I have done. I am not saying that everything that comes out from my pencil and mind is going to be cherished by other people. I at least know that I will.
